The top three established UK gardening channels drown out all new voices.
YouTube selects suggested videos based on your previous viewing habits.
There has to be a reason to share your personal space with someone new.
There are channels who overshare, channels who inform and personality driven channels who entertain - and while I watch most (if not all?) of the more popular channels I’m always pleased to come across channels who produce new, relevant or interesting content.
This really is going to be a short set of articles because there’s a limit to the number of channels you can group together who might share a similar goal, niche or outlook - but I thought it might be helpful to draw attention to UK gardeners with less than 10k subscribers because there’s a finite number of content consumers in an already crowded field.
I’ve always thought that it's important not to become fixated on a single channel because everyone has something to offer and you’re never in a position to know everything - since I started thinking about highlighting undersubscribed UK gardeners last year, two of the channels have passed the 10k threshold but rather than exclude them, I’m going to celebrate their success.
My top 5 snapshot of undersubscribed UK gardening channels are, in no particular order …
Down to Earth with Jim - an aptly named channel for a 6’ 3”, Lancashire based allotmenteer, who shares his passion for growing food with his Mum - straightforward information about building beds and growing food, and I’ve never seen him put a foot wrong.
The Veg Plot - Not just a gardener, a well read educator - a great place to expand your understanding of why our food grows. Delving into the science and nature surrounding the Soil Food Web, with videos on the role of Bacteria and Hyphae, Thermophilic and Johnson/Su composting techniques to name a few.
That’s What We Call The Good Life - This was an interesting inclusion as it’s been going for almost 7 years now. But when you’re only creating videos once a week it’s quite difficult to ‘connect’ or ‘feel’ anything, but a binge watch turns a slow burner into a useful resource for gardeners.
Allotment Family Diary - Devon based allotment family sharing their lives and surroundings - a personable soap opera covering storm damage, dog-walks, trials and tribulations.
Deeply Rooted Garden - If I was a YouTuber, this is who I’d choose to be. Deeply Rooted represents the ability to change your life and present the journey with a thoughtful honesty and realism - a skilled videographer and raconteur with only 20+ videos and almost every one pitched perfectly to connect with any level of gardener.
“I use many hybrid, experimental and regenerative techniques, I run a Cattery and I’m a YouTube junkie.”
